You Don’t Have to Do This Alone: Why Breastfeeding Support Groups Matter
By Brianne Taggart, IBCLC & Founder of Breezy Babies
Whether you’re nursing around the clock, exclusively pumping, combo-feeding, or figuring out what works for you and your baby—breastfeeding can be beautiful, but also hard. It’s physically demanding, emotionally intense, and at times, incredibly isolating. That’s where support groups come in.
Breastfeeding Is Natural, But That Doesn’t Mean It’s Easy
Despite what we see on Instagram, breastfeeding doesn’t always “just happen.” Sore nipples, latch issues, milk supply worries, and the mental load of feeding a baby can be overwhelming. And for many new parents, those early days are filled with questions—and self-doubt.
That’s why finding a support group can be a total game-changer. Sometimes, all it takes is sitting in a room (or Zoom!) with people who get it to remind you that you’re doing a great job.
Why Support Groups Work
Breastfeeding support groups are powerful for a few reasons:
You get to hear real stories. The highs, the lows, the messy middles—it’s comforting to know others are figuring it out too.
You can troubleshoot in real time. Whether you’re worried about supply or wondering if your pump flange is the right size, you’ll likely find someone who’s been there.
You’re reminded that you’re not alone. Just knowing there’s a place where you’re seen and supported makes a huge difference in your feeding journey.
As an IBCLC, I’ve seen how quickly confidence grows when a parent feels supported—not just by professionals, but by peers walking the same road.
How to Find Your Feeding Village
If you’re looking for a breastfeeding support group, try starting here:
Ask your local IBCLC (many host weekly or monthly groups)
Check with your birth center, doula, or pediatrician’s office.
Look into local WIC offices or La Leche League chapters.
Search Facebook or Instagram for local mom meetups, even casual stroller groups.
And if you can’t find a group that feels right? Start one. Seriously. It could be as simple as a few moms meeting for coffee or chatting in a group text. Community doesn’t have to be big—it just has to be there.
You’re Not Meant to Do This Alone
Breastfeeding is a journey, and no one should feel like they have to figure it all out on their own. Support groups offer more than answers—they offer connection, encouragement, and the gentle reminder that whatever your feeding goals look like, you deserve support along the way.
You’ve got this, and your village is out there waiting to cheer you on.
